What hit frequency actually measures
Hit frequency (sometimes called "hit rate") is simply the percentage of spins that pay out something — anything, from a full jackpot down to a token payout that's smaller than the bet you placed. A slot with a 25% hit frequency returns some kind of payout on roughly one spin out of four. A slot with a 45% hit frequency pays out on nearly half its spins. A worked example: two 96% slots, opposite feel

Some studios publish it in their game's help screen or paytable alongside RTP and volatility rating; others don't publish it at all, leaving players to infer it from play. A rough shortcut: a game explicitly labeled "low volatility" by its studio is very likely to also carry a comparatively high hit frequency, and a game labeled "high volatility" is very likely to carry a comparatively low one, even without an exact percentage published.
