Maverick Gaming to Close Two More Washington Casinos
Maverick Gaming will close its Riverside Casino and Great American Casino, both in Tukwila, Washington, on November 1, 2026, cutting 238 jobs in the process. The closures continue a wave of downsizing at the Kirkland-based cardroom operator, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in July 2025 and has been shedding properties across the state ever since.
What's closing, and how many jobs
Riverside Casino accounts for 142 of the eliminated positions and Great American Casino the remaining 96, for a combined 238 layoffs at the two Tukwila properties, located just south of Seattle. The closures bring the number of Maverick cardrooms shut down or slated for closure since June 2026 to five, affecting more than 400 workers in total. Silver Dollar SeaTac Casino closed June 30 with 65 layoffs, and the Crazy Moose Mountlake and Silver Dollar Mill Creek casinos closed July 31 with 123 combined layoffs.
How Maverick got here
Maverick Gaming became Washington's largest nontribal gaming operator after an aggressive expansion, acquiring 24 venues including 19 in a single year following the 2018 Supreme Court decision that struck down the federal ban on state-authorized sports betting. But Washington restricted commercial sports betting to tribal casinos only under a 2020 state law, leaving Maverick's cardrooms without the sports betting revenue the company had built its expansion around. Maverick sued the state and federal government in 2022, arguing the tribal-only structure was an unconstitutional monopoly; that lawsuit was dismissed.
The company points to a combination of factors behind the ongoing closures: competition from tribal casinos, rising labor costs, high debt service from its earlier expansion, and general industry headwinds. On August 31, 2026, a bankruptcy court granted Maverick a fourth extension to file its formal reorganization plan.
